Original Text of Sandberger in a footnote to the description of Chenopus oxydactylus, Sandberger, 1861, p. 188:

  • "Ausser Ch. speciosus kann nur noch Ch. anceps Michelotti n. sp. (in litt. et specim.) aus dem Untermiocän von Dego in Piemont verglichen werden. Hier reicht aber der angewachsene Lappen bis zum oberen Ende des Gewindes und die Form der übrigen Lappen, wie auch der Kiele weicht sehr ab, namentlich erheben sich letztere steil aus der Fläche des letzten Umgangs, was bei Ch. oxydactylus durchaus nicht der Fall ist."

Comment

  • Although Sandberger refers to Michelotti, Michelotti has never published Chenopus anceps. Sandberger does not provide a description, see above. But from the phrasing by Sandberger [comparison with C. oxydactylus Sandberger, 1861] one could construct what C. anceps looks like, and is here regarded as a definition (see ICZN Art. 12.1.). Therefore, the name Chenopus anceps is an available name from Sandberger, 1861.
