Orignal Description of Calyptraphorus chelonites by White, 1887, p. 174:

• "Concha pequena, subfusiforme; o lado em que se forma a abertura no estado adulto é achatado por uma grande callosidade, que oblitera nesse lado lodo traço da divisão da espira em voltas, 6 também quasi inteiramente no lado opposto. Neste ultimo lado a callosidade é mais irregular, havendo apparentemente só um logar no meio em que a callosidade não se forma quando a concha attinge o estado adulto. A abertura é comparativamente pequena, oblonga, terminando anteriormente em um pequeno canal excavado em um longo e delgado bico, que é recto e em linha com o eixo da concha; lábio externo um pouco engrossado e recurvado, truncado tanto na extremidade anterior como na posterior; margem externa ligeiramente convexa, tendo na extremidade anterior uma pequena projecção obtusa."
• "Shell small, subfusiform; the side upon which the aperture opens at maturity is flattened by a large accumulation of callus, by which all trace of the division of the spire into volutions is obliterated upon that side, and almost wholly upon the opposite side also. Upon the latter side the accumulation is more irregular, apparently leaving only one spot at the middle upon which no callus was deposited when the shell reached maturity. The aperture is comparatively small, oblong, ending anteriorly in a minute channel which is excavated out of a long slender beak, which is straight and in line with the axis of the shell; outer lip a little thickened and reflexed, truncated at both the posterior and anterior ends; the outer margin gently convex and bearing at its anterior end a small obtuse projection."

Comment by White, 1887, p. 175:

• "Associadas com estas conchas, ha algumas outras do mesmo tamanho que eu considero como representando esta espécie justamente antes da formação da callosidade, que tem logar somente na concha adulta. Estes exemplares são fusiformes; as voltas são em numero de sete ou mais, o lado externo das da espira sendo achatado ou ligeiramente convexo e separado por uma sutura linear; a superficie é lisa ou quasi lisa, excepto no ápice que é ornado de pequenas varizes longitudinaes. Estas conchas têm tambem um bico delgado como o da forma typica acima descripta, e póde-se observar em algumas delias uma pequena callosidade no lado externo da espira. O lábio externo destas formas não foi determinado."
• "Associated with these shells are some others of similar size, which I regard as representing this species just prior to the accumulation of callus, which occurs only at the full maturity of the shell. These specimens are fusiform; the volutions seven or more in number, the outer side of those of the spire flattened, or gently convex and separated by a linear suture; their surface is plain or nearly so, except those of the apex, which are marked by minute longitudinal varices. These shells have also a slender beak, like that of the typical form just described, and a small accumulation of callus may be detected upon the outer side of the spire of some of them. The outer lip of these forms has not been determined."
