Species / Conomurex Coniformis

Stromboidea

Original Description of Strombus coniformis by Sowerby, 1842, p. 29:

  • "T. conica, laevi, pallide fulva, fasciis brunneis interruptis cincta, valide angulata; spira brevissima; anfractibus ad angulum plicatis; apertura angustata; labio externo vix expanso, sinu parvo."
  • "Shell cone-shaped, smooth, palely yellowish-brown, brown bands interrupted encircled, strongly angled; extremely short spire; whorls plicate at shoulder; narrowed aperture, external lip barely expanded, with small sinus." (Translation by Kronenberg, Liverani & Dekker, 2009)

Locus typicus: Oman, Masirah Island (Kronenberg, Liverani & Dekker, 2009)

  • "Both specimens are rather young, from the cabinets of Messr. Norris and Stainforth, but we think that from the general form, and the absence of the posterior sinus, the species will prove to be distinct."
