Species / Macrostrombus Collierensis

Original description of Macrostrombus collierensis by Petuch & Drolshagen, 2011:

  • "Shell large for genus, elongated, fusiform; shoulder sloping, almost nonexistent; body whorl ornamented with 24-26 large, wide, spiral cords and 3-5 small, low, longitudinal costae; subsutural area ornamented with numerous fine spiral cords and numerous small, thin, longitudinal costae; intersection of cords and costae produces cancellate pattern along subsutural area; spire elevated, conical, elongately pyramindal; spire whorls concave, producing stepped appearance; spire whorls ornamented with numerous fine spiral cords and small longitudinal costae, producing cancellate pattern; early whorls (first 5-6 whorls) ornamented with large, prominent, low rounded knobs; lip flaring; stromboid notch shallow and essentially unformed."

Locus typicus: Upper coralline beds in the Florida Rock Industries Naples Mine (old Mule Pen Quarry), Immokalee Road, Golden Gate Subdivision, East Naples, Collier County, Florida.

Stratum typicum: Uppermost beds (Petuch Unit 2 equivalent) of the Golden Gate Member of the Tamiami Formation of southern Florida, Latest Piacenzian Pliocene.

Holotype: Length 161 mm, width 104 mm.

Etymology: Named for Collier County, Florida.
