Species / Canarium Betuleti

Stromboidea

Original Description of Strombus (Canarium) ochroglottis betuleti by Kronenberg, 1991, p. 54:

  • " Adult shell 18-30mm. in length, solid, nodulated, with moderal spiral threads near the aperture, elongate quadrate in shape with a semistriate columella. Whorls 5-7 1/2; nuclear whorls 2 1/2, which are glossy, smooth white and rounded. First postnuclear whorl with fine incised spiral lines, which become gradually obsolete on the penultimate whorl. On the second postnuclear whorl a strong, rounded cord appears just below the suture. This cord dissappears rather abruptly on the last half of the body whorl. Spire with numerous small nodules on the shoulder, on the penultimate whorl 10-15. Last whorl with 1-3, sometimes hardly recognizable blunt nodules, last 1/3 of body whorl without nodules. Base of shell on ventral side with 9-11 spiral threads. Outside of outer lip varix with numerous spiral threads. Columella smooth at the centre and bounded above by 6-8 and below by 5-10 minute plicae, at the back with a yellow-ochre tinge at the upper side. Inside of outer lip bearing 30-35 fine raised, occasionally bifurcated lirae. Aperture yellow-ochre, colouring reaching margin of outer lip, between the lirae purple-brown. Stromboid notch well developed. Colour of shell variable: maculated and/or banded with pale brown and purple tinges on a whitish background, very often purple blotches between the subsutural nodules. Soft parts and operculum unknown."

Locus typicus: "The holotype was collected by fishermen from Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, in 1987. Paratype 1 was collected by the late Mrs. Dr. M. I. Gerhardt on a beach near Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka. It was collected between december 15th and december 31st 1970. All other paratypes are from the same lot as the holotype. Trincomalee, Sri Lanka is herewith designated typelocality." (Kronenberg, 1991:54)

Types: "The holotype is present in coll. GK (no. 911) and will be donated to NNM. Paratype 1 is present in ZMA, paratype 2 in coll. JB (no. 43b). Paratypes 3-6 are in coll. GK." (Kronenberg, 1991:54)
