Original Description of Strombus variabilis by Swainson, 1820:

• "S. testa nodose plicata, spira striis nullis; labio interiore simplice, exteriore reflecto, intra laevi, supra leviter lobato.
• Shell with nodulous plaits, the spire not striated. Inner lip simple. Outer lip reflected, smooth within, and slightly lobed above."

Jeanette & Scott Johnson about Dolomena variabilis from Kwajalein:

• "Dolomena variabilis are relatively rare in the Marshalls, usually found on fine sandy lagoon slopes, primarily at night. We have found specimens from about 12 to 40m depth, and they range up to about 42mm in length."
