Stromboidea

Oosting, 1925:58 defined Labiostrombus as replacement name for Gallinula "Kl" Mörch, 1852:61 [by Oostingh attributed to "(Klein) Herrmannsen, 1847, H. & A. Adams, 1854"], non Brisson, 1760 [Aves]; [as Strombus (Labiostrombus)]

Type species: {Strombus succinctus Linnaeus, 1758 (Oostingh, 1925:58)}; Strombus epidromis Linnaeus, 1758 [by subsequent designation by Cossmann, 1904:9]

The species of Labiostrombus are:

1854

Adams & Adams, 1854, p. 259:

  • "Sub.gen. Gallinula, Klein. Inner lip restricted, not spread widely over the body-whorl; posterior canal frequently long, ascending the spire."
  • "Campbellii, Gray. canarium, Linn. columba, Gmel. deformis, Gray. epidromis, Linn. fusiformis, Sow. gibbus, Mart. Japonicus, Reeve. labiosus, Wood. Listeri, Gray. marginatus, Linn. pulchellus, Reeve. Sibbaldii, Sow. succinctus, Linn. Swainsoni, Reeve. variabilis, Swains. vittatus, Linn."

1885

Tryon, 1885, p. 101:

  • "Section IV. Gallinula, Klein, 1753. Lip somewhat dilated, not digitate, frequently descending the spire behind; inner lip restricted, defined. S. succinctus, Linn."

1904

Comment Cossmann, 1904, p. 10:

1960

Abbott, 1960, p. 107:

  • "The first valid introduction of Gallinula for mollusks was made by Mörch in 1852. Tryon's type designation of succinctus Linné is invalid, since that species is not listed by any previous authors of Gallinula. Cossmann's 1904 designation of epidromis Linné is the first valid designation. Oostingh's Labiostrombus, a new name, will have to take this type also. Herrmannsen's 1847 name is not defined nor contains an species by name. It is also a homonym of the bird genus Gallinula Brisson, 1760."
