Original Diagnosis of Gymnarus by Gabb, 1868, p. 130:

  • "General form of Pugnellus; outer lip less heavy and produced posteriorly to a hook; anterior canal slightly produced and straight; incrustation not covering the entire shell, the back being exposed."

Type: by monotypy Pugnellus manubriatus Gabb, 1864

Following Kiel & Bandel, 1999 Pugnellus hauthali Wilckens, 1905 might be the ancestor of Gymnarus and Conchothyra.
